Personality: Ringlins name means: Chilling Glance, and this sums up his personality completely. There is a pure Noldo fire under that ice, but few have seen it.
In combat or battle he is as cold as his eyes, and he despises any form of weakness.
However, since he was raised with a twin sister, the only person he ever loved, he has a paradoxical ( if somewhat distant ) gentleness towards children.
He does not respect strength alone in others, it has to be combined with deep intellegence, and charm and since he is far more Elven than mortal he is attracted to beauty, although not in any romantic sense, it is simply his character and upbringing that defines that. His coldness hides a wry and ironic sense of humor, but few ever see his smile, which is charming and surprisingly warm.
Detailed History:
Named Tanuk, by his father, Ringlin is the son of Uldor the Accursed, slain in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, by Maglor son of Feanor, for his treachery against the sons of Feanor. Easterling men had been corrupted by Morgoth and Sauron and many who feigned alliance and friendship with the Noldor were secretly servants of the Dark Valar. Uldor was one of these. For his part in reporting the counsels of the Eldar to Morgoth, Uldor was given a captured Noldorin woman as a '' gift ''.
It might be worth stating a fact about Elves at this point. Most Elven women who are so forced, fade and die, unless there is a strong and compelling reason for them to cling to life. Laurielle, in a dream, felt comfort and a certainty that she was to bear these children, for she knew she carried twins, and that they would be important, and also far more like to her own kindred than to Men.
And indeed it was so, the babes were the stamp and image of the Noldor when they were born, and grew swiftly, but Laurielles strength waned and faded and after nourishing them, she passed to the Halls of Mandos.
Uldor was pleased with these children, his son would be a warrior, and his daughter herself a gift to Morgoth when she was grown. He pushed his son hard from when the boy could first lift a weapon, while his daughter was sequestered with the women on his tribe, and protected. He soon saw that Tanuk not only looked like the cursed, bright eyed Eldar, but had the strength of an elf-lord and the swiftness and speed also.
Tanuk was sixteen at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, accounted a man among the Easterling tribes, and he fought there, - he believed that he fought for Maedhros the mighty elder son of Feanor, although he had only glimpsed the Eldar once or twice as they came to the camp of Ulfang - called ever after , the Black. For his father hid him, knowing that he too much resembled the Elf Lords, for it to be discounted, and no Elf would willingly give one of their own women to any Man, even Beren Erchamion had had to pay a great price. So Tanuk was hidden, but he did watch, and his heart and that of his sisters leaped when they saw the Noldor, in their gleaming armour, beautiful and flashing eyed, tall and proud. Tanuk was proud to fight alongside them.
Until, in the Nirnaeth, Ulfang and Uldor betrayed them, falling on the sons of Feanor from the rear and Tanuk, who had fought and been wounded, but kept fighting, and who had thrilled to see, even in such terrible slaughter, the brilliance of the fighting Eldar, was drenched with horror as he realized what was happening. Black betrayal.
'' What are you doing? '' he screamed at his father over the roar of the combat, but he was ignored, perhaps not even heard. He did not lift his weapons against the Noldor, after, but he did watch, with a curious, cold satisfaction , as Maglor in all his fury, slew his father.
The Easterlings, however, did not reap the reward they desired for their treachery, Morgoth shut them in to the lands of Dor Lomin where they harrassed the women and young and old, but denied them any richer land.
Tanuk returned from that battle to find the women waiting, - as women always do, standing at their tents, for many had died, although Morgoth had the victory. he went to his sisters tent and fell on his knees, bloodied and bruised and his armor hacked.
'' We betrayed them '' He groaned and then he wept as his sister knelt and dre his head against her breast.
The cold light entered his eyes from that day. He told his sister that they must leave, for he despised these traitors , indeed he always had, in his heart, but as long as he believed that they were fighting with the Eldar, he had contained that - he had even the faintest hope , a dream really, that he might himself take service with the Lords of the Eldar. Now all that had been smashed into ruin.
His sister was alarmed, but she made no argument, her own future looked bleak enough. She did not know she was about to be sent to Angband, where she surely would have died , but her belief she would be married off to one of her father or Ulfangs chieftains caused her to feel disgust and horror.
In the aftermath of the battle, one night, Tanuk lead his sister away, taking only his weapons, and both of them carrying a pack.
They had gone some leagues, when by sheer ill luck, they ran into a patrol of outriders of the Easterlings. Tanuk felt his fury overcome him like a scalding flood of ice, and he drew his weapons, telling his sister to run.
He killed the patrol, he never remembered how, only that his bitter anger took control of him, but their horn calls alerted others and he was injured from a gash in the bicep and knee and was forced to flee. A sudden rain fell, driven out of the west, and this and the visibility enabled him to escape, but he lost his sister. His wounds knit quickly, and he even went back, to espy on the camp which was moving westward, but he saw no sign of his twin. The only thing he was sure of was that she lived, he felt the unbroken bond within him.
Tanuk went east and south, away from Beleriand, across the Blue Mountains, and here he encountered Laiquendi Elves, who deemed him Noldo, until they discovered he did not speak their language, but he raised his hands in a sign of peace, and something about the pain in his ice blue eyes caused them to lower their bows. It was one of these who gave him the name he used ever after , Ringlin, ( chilling glance ) and Sindacollo, for the grey cloak that he had worn when he first met them.
After the War of Wrath when the Edain were gifted with the isle of Numenor, for their gallantry and courage in the wars of the First Age, against Morgoth Bauglir, Ringlin , mainly from curiosity, decided to see this place, ruled by the son of Earendil the Blessed.
